How busy is Chamonix in the summer?

The busiest time of year for Chamonix is August – more active even than New Year or half-term week.

Before the crowded peak season, June is the ideal month to visit Chamonix. More lodging options are available, and the elevators have started to open with reduced lines.

July is lively but not as busy as August, and also an excellent time to visit.

All lifts are accessible to mountain bikers in July and August using the dedicated cross-country and downhill paths.

Due to the high number of day visitors throughout the summer, Main Street and the restaurants might become congested during lunch and dinner times.

You may make reservations for the Aiguille du Midi lift so you won’t have to stand in line.

Use public transport. Forget about completing a 15-minute commute through the town throughout the day (10 am to 6 pm), and forget about obtaining a parking spot at the start of a popular trek after 10 am.

You’ll be alright if you begin your hikes before 9 am. There will always be people who start earlier than you, but the majority begin between 9 and 11 am and have their lunch at the top, making the area quite congested. Start your journey in the summertime even at 8 am, to ascend in the shade and chill of the morning. When you reach the top treeline, and the vistas begin to open up, you will still enjoy the lovely morning light.
