Our journey started with boat trip to Helsinki where we had an Air Finland flight booked through Finnmatkat. The flight had a scheduled refueling stop in Abu Dhabi for one hour at night. During that hour a heavy fog came and therefore the departure from Abu Dhabi was delayed. At first by six hours, then it came out that pilot working hours have been finished and therefore the departure was delayed again. Then it came out that pilots have started the strike and new crew was sent to serve us. But it really took long time.
We had to decide quite quickly where to go in ten days. We thought that it should not be far away as we only had five days for that trip. We have a general principle that in summer we go to Northern destinations. Shortly we came to conclusion that Iceland would be a good idea.
We have thought about visiting Arabian Peninsula and now, in March 2007, it seemed to us that time is right. After reading some Lonely Planet travel forum topics and with help from friends we decided to visit Oman, because it promised to be beautiful nature, rich culture and not very touristic yet.
Search in the internet indicated that not all major airports have direct connection to Muscat, the capital of Oman. Also, the price of the ticket from London or Frankfurt was available for about 500-600 EUR. BUT, as we live in Tallinn, Estonia this means we also need to fly there. Or travel agent from Matkapunkt suggested an option to start the trip from Riga and fly Turkish Airlines. The price for the ticket was 510 EUR.
The Philippine archipelago is made up of 7107 islands. Philippines is located favorably in relation to many of Southeast Asia's main water bodies: the South China Sea, Philippine Sea, Sulu Sea, Celebes Sea, and Luzon Strait. Philippines is a home to spectacular coral-fringed islands, populated by variety of wildlife and cultures.
In Philippines you will find stunning beaches, rice terraces, active volcanoes, underground river, tropical rain forest, unhabited paradise islands, hills and caves, and also very hospitable people.
MABUHAY! – Filipinos greet the guests in Tagalog - in one of two official languages of the Philippines. The other is English and as English is widely spoken, it makes traveling in Philippines very easy.
We have visited United States so far three times and always had pleasant memories. Last visit was at 2000 to Connecticut. It is strange that sometimes we have a feeling that we want to go back to US and see something different. We know that this is safe choice and will be pleased again because of the easiness of traveling there.
We have had discussions several times about visiting New Orleans, listening good music there and see the difference of that compared to the rest of US. As from Tallinn and nearby airports there are no direct flights to New Orleans, we started with contacting travel agencies about airfare offers to the close airports - we thought about Houston, Atlanta, Memphis and other cities. The best offer was to fly to Atlanta.
Then we started to draw the route with the help of Streets and Trips. We knew that we want to visit New Orleans, Nashville and Memphis. Also we wanted to relax a little on the beach. It turned out OK, with 3000km (now we should think in miles!), seven states and 12 days.
