From the bus station we followed the map towards the Basilica. The climb up Fourvière Hill was quite challenging, but also rewarding part of our trip to Lyon. The hill is is situated on the west bank of the River Saône. The walk to the top is pleasant in its own and the views of Lyon once you get there are superb - looking down at Lyon from the Hill - seems to offer you a natural invitation to explore further in that direction.
At this walk we stopped at the Roman Fortress with its theatre which was being used for concerts.
The Basilica Notre-Dame de Fourvière is a basilica in Lyon built in 19th century in a very eclectic style: austere exterior and luxuriously decorated interior. Walking inside you can find gilded decorations everywhere in this basilica from floor to ceiling.
As the Basilica is on the top of the hill, there is a beautiful view on the Lyon.
As it should be characteristic for the capital of gastronomy, there are so good smells and views on the Lyon market at the river.
